We live in a time of vitiated social relations — religion, caste, and class divide people. This festival has never been just about music and dance, but about the possibilities that these arts offer in uniting people in an act of celebration. In an effort to bring down human-made walls, the Vizha has been designed to educate and liberate audiences and artists, to take art from exclusive stages to inclusive spaces, and making all art forms accessible to all audiences. The Vizha is a volunteer-driven, crowd-organized effort involving the fishing villages of Urur and Olcott Kuppam, the residents of Chennai and representatives of NalandaWay Foundation. The festival’s objectives include the promotion of arts and arts education among children.
