Fish farming in Uganda has not developed beyond small subsistence scales and yet according to the country’s National Development Plan, fish farming presents vast opportunities for socio-economic development in terms of livelihood, income and employment.

Fisheries production has been declining to the extent that fish consumption per capital is currently only 8kg which is much below that recommended amounts by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Uganda has now come up with measures to stop the illegal fishing and promotion of an Aquaculture cage fishing culture to help the industry grow and contribute to the economy in a more sustainable manner. Daniel Arapmoi reports from Kampala.
