Addressing the persistent issue of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, the Vietnam Coast Guard (VCG) has pledged to amplify its efforts in 2024. This commitment was unveiled at a conference hosted by the VCG Command on January 3. Beyond combating IUU fishing, the VCG’s wider mandate encompasses the protection of national sovereignty, underpinning security, order, and safety across islands and at sea.

Despite a demanding year, the VCG successfully accomplished all tasks assigned in 2023. The force also recommended policies to tackle maritime issues to the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defence. Among its operational achievements, the VCG carried out 18 search and rescue missions. These critical operations saved 36 lives, rescued two fishing boats and one cargo ship, and recovered three bodies.

As part of its broader mission, the VCG confronted six instances of IUU fishing involving seven vessels. This is a significant part of the VCG’s efforts to protect Vietnam’s marine resources and uphold international maritime law.

The report also noted a significant surge in criminal prevention and control activities. The VCG investigated 1,759 cases and handled 2,075 suspects, marking a substantial rise from the previous year. As a result of these operations, VNĐ85 billion (approximately US$3.48 million) in administrative fines were imposed, and various exhibits were confiscated. These actions underscore the VCG’s commitment to maintaining order and security in Vietnam’s maritime territories.

In the face of potential disasters, the VCG remains in a state of readiness, prepared to perform search and rescue operations. The VCG’s increased efforts against IUU fishing and its achievements in 2023 signal a firm commitment to maritime security and sovereignty, further bolstering Vietnam’s position in the region.
