Relatively few institutions collect statistical information about indigenous peoples. However, policies continue to be made and programmes continue to be implemented that have an enormous impact on indigenous peoples. There is a need for data to be collected to measure this impact. Developing indicators relevant to indigenous peoples means developing ways to express their situation and concerns in numerical terms. This resource book aims to assist and encourage further work to develop social and environmental indicators relevant to indigenous peoples, with more participation from indigenous peoples and organizations. The book is divided into three parts. The first part reports on some of the work already done to develop global and regional indicators. Part two presents a collection of readings to assist readers setting out to develop indicators relevant to indigenous peoples. Part three is provided for reference: it shows the monitoring frameworks of three global indicators processes that affect indigenous peoples.
